The Enterprise encounters the Tamarians, a race with whom they have never been able to communicate. The Enterprise's mission is to open negotiations with the Tamarians - a mission that seems doomed to failure when the Tamarians kidnap Picard and strand him on a planet with their own captain to face a nameless beast.
