Nyota Uhura ( Nichelle Nichols ) Born in 2239 her name is derived from the Swahili word for Freedom.   A highly skilled technician, Uhura was also a talented musician.   She was well known, and liked, for serenading her fellow crew members with song. 

In 2267 her memory was wiped clean by Nomad and she had to be retrained.    Following the re-assignment of the original Enterprise to Starfleet Academy Uhura served  at Starfleet Command on Earth.  Scheduled to give a seminar she instead returned to her post on the Enterprise A, at Kirk's request, before the Khitomer Conference.
