Benjamin Lafayette Sisko ( Avery Brooks ) entered Star Fleet in 2350.  At first he would beam home to have dinner with his parents every night in New Orleans.  He spent a field study assignment on Starbase 137 during his sophomore year.   Early in his career he met and was mentored by Curzon Dax, this friendship would continue with Jadzia Dax, at Pelios Station.  The two then served aboard the U.S.S. Livingston.     Sisko then served aboard the U.S.S. Okinawa under Capt. Leyton.   

Originally Sisko was interested in engineering but Leyton saw command potential in him and promoted him to Lt. Commander.  He then made him the ships 1st officer.    While serving aboard the Okinawa Sisko and Leyton fought in the war with the Tzenkethi.   Sisko served as executive officer with the rank of Lt. Commander aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga at the time of the ships destruction in the battle of Wolf 359.    His wife, Jennifer, was killed during this battle. 

Sisko was then posted to the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards on Mars where he spent three years.  One of his projects included the design of a new type of fighting vessel, the Defiant was the prototype.  He also worked on Earth directing the construction of orbital habitats. 

He was subsequently promoted to Commander and assigned to Deep Space Nine, a space station around the planet Bajor that was being turned over to the Bajorans and Federation by the Cardassians.    The space station was considered a minor posting. Sisko though was delegated the Emissary by the Kai Opaka (their highest religious leader).  Then with the discovery of the Worm hole the station became extremely important as the gateway to the gamma quadrant.  

Later DS-9 also became involved heavily with the politics surrounding the Maquis DMZ.   The stations proximity to the DMZ made it an important station for monitoring and policing activity as well as for smugglers and defectors.   Sisko was promoted to Captain and has proven to be an effective commander and a vital link in the Federations attempts to maintain its presence in the Alpha quadrant.
