Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ).Captain of the fifth and sixth Starship Enterprise (D and E). Jean Luc was born in Labarre,France on Earth to Maurice and Yvette Picard.   His father was a traditional vintner who did not like new technology.  Jean Luc had one older brother Robert who chose to stay and work the farm while Jean Luc followed a career in Starfleet.     As a boy he enjoyed building ships, starships that is, in a bottle.    One of his favorite was a legendary Promellian battle cruiser.

Jean failed in his first attempt to get into the academy but passed the next year.   He is the only cadet to have ever won the Academy Marathon on Danula II in his freshman year.   It was also during his academy days that he got into a fight with two Nausicaans one of whom pierced his heart.  He was saved but had to have a prosthetic heart.     Also while at the Academy he was almost dismissed due to some egregious offense (which has never been named).  He credits the groundskeeper Boothby with helping him to make the right decision which led to his eventual graduation.

Lt. Jean Luc was serving as a bridge officer aboard the Stargazer, a Constellation class vessel, when her captain was killed.    Lt Picard took command of the vessel and for his bravery and service during the emergency he was offered command of it.    The Stargazer was later ambushed and destroyed by a Ferengi Vessel but not before Jean Luc came up with the, now famous, Picard maneuver.    Although he destroyed the other ship it was too late to save the Stargazer.     Although he was court martialed for losing the Stargazer, Starfleet protocol demands it, he was exonerated. 

Shortly after it was commissioned Jean Luc became Capt. of the New Enterprise the Enterprise-D.  Later he was offered promotion to the admiralty but turned it down since it would mean leaving space exploration for a desk job.    He has also been offered command of the Starfleet Academy and was asked to accompany an Richard Galen, old professor and noted archeologist, as his assistant on a study of ancient civilizations.

Because of his unique position as once being part of the borg collective Jean Luc Picard is considered one of the leading authorities on the borg.   He is also somewhat distrusted for the same reason.  "The Best of both Worlds 1","The Best of both Worlds 2"

Picard's personal interests are many and varied.   He was considered to be a bright star in Federation Archeology and enjoys the study of ancient races and civilizations.   He has a fascination for studying puzzles that have never been solved.   After an incident with a space buoy he took to playing the Ressikan flute.
