McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ) attended the University of Mississippi on Earth.  While a student there he met and had a romance with Emony Dax while she was visiting Earth around 2245 to judge a gymnastics competition.  Early in his career his father contracted a fatal illness that was, currently uncurable.  Seeing his father in pain with no forseeable possibility of cure McCoy agreed to his wishes and turned off his life support.   Two weeks later a cure was found for the disease.   McCoy also had a romantic involvment with Nancy Crater.    In 2253 McCoy developed a neurosurgical technique to repair damaged cerebral cortexes.

McCoy joined and remained associated with the Enterprise and her successors for 27 years.  McCoy retired from Starfleet after the return of the five year mission but he returned to Starfleet at Kirk's request when the ship went to intercept V'Ger.

McCoy was wrongly convicted, along with Kirk, for the murder of Chancellor Gorkon.  He also escaped with Kirk.   McCoy was set to retire but didn't.   His last known official act as a retired Starfleet Admiral was to make an inspection of the Enterprise E at age 137 "The Next Generation".
