Later that year in 2364, Captain Picard promoted young Wesley Crusher to the field comission of the acting ensign assigned to the helm. Wesley would pilot the Enterprise for another three years.

Wesley let his ambition of science and physics get out of hand more than once. In early 2366, he created a breed of sentient, live nanites, tiny robots that are supposed to help computers. Well, they got lose in the Enterprise's computer and caused great havoc. Then, in 2367, he tried to extrapolate on Kosinki and the Traveler's warp physics. he created a warp bubble that entrapped his mother.

More than once the Traveler would come into Wesley's life. The first instance would be in 2364 when the Enterprise was hurled out of our galaxy and into Galaxy M-33. The Traveler told Dr. Crusher that Wesley was different in that he had a grasp of what's out there, or more to the point of that's there is more in the universe than what humans could believe, a place where time and thought go hand in hand. Then, when Wesley creates the warp bubble, the Traveler comes again to tell him that he has something special. Wesley just brushes it off as some kind of fluke.

In late 2367, Wesley Crusher joins Starfleet Academy. Then, in 2368, he comes aboard the Enterprise right when the crew was overtaken by the game by the K'Tarians. he helped find a way to break the brainwashing an save Starfleet from an embarrassing alien takeover.

Later that year, while piloting a small craft with Nova Squadron, a tragic accident occured in that Cadet Joshua Albert was killed. Wesley and the rest of his squadron lied to the investigating committee and said that they did not perform the Kolvoord Starburst Maneuver when in fact they did. When their cover up was revealed, Wesley and the rest of Nova Squadron-with the exception of the squadron commander-was heldback from graduating for one year. Cadet Nicholas Locarno (or Lieutenant Thomas Paris, tkae your pick, the actor played both characters.) was expelled and was not allowed to graduated from Starfleet Academy.

In 2370, Wesley came aboard the Enterprise again, but this time he came aboard with a bad attitude. The Enterprise is at the Dorvan System, one of the star systems that is under dispute with the new Cardassian/Federation Demilitarized Zone. Wesley gets involoved with the Native American inhabitants of this world. When a fight breaks out between the Native Americans and Cardassian soldiers, time mysteriously stops. Wesley finds that the Traveler did it. The Traveler then tells Wesley that it is time for him to stop and change career tracks. Wesley resigns from Starfleet Academy and stays on Dorvan V to study to become like the Traveler.
